 JUNE 25, 2009

Water:   675 cfs (Farmy & Still combine) = Fishable again

Temp: 52

Clarity: Clear

POACHER HOT LINE
- 1-800-842-4357

6/19 at 10:30am The flow out of the dam, on the Farmy, is at 281 cfs. The flow from the Still is
at 1190 cfs. Both are dropping, however, the Farmy fishes at 600cfs or less and
the Still, when this high, can make the Farmy dirty and the fish don't feed.

6/16 - Due to the high and off-color water, coming from the Still River, the fishing was off,  up and down the river, however, late today the Farmy dropped and the Still is coming down fast and clear. Should be good for Wed. and Thurs. till late, unless mother nature has another hissy.

6/4 - The Sulfers, Vitreus, March Browns, Tan, Green, and Summer Caddis and tiny olives(Pseudocloeon) are on the water. The water is still colder then normal and what you think might be a great hatch, is just beginning. What a great time to be on the water!!

PLEASE Practice Catch & Release, de-barb your hooks, only touch fish with wet hands and keep them in the water as much as you can. Save our resource and educate when you can....WE are responsible to keep this sport alive and the fish whole.

Hello, Mr. Brown Trout"

SWIFT RIVER, MA

Water: 27 cfs =  down
Temp:  55 degrees

6/23- The bubbler is on, the flow is low but the water is colder and at a good temp for the fish.

6/20 - THE WATER IS BACK DOWN...I suppose the work on the Bubbler continues, however, I think with enough pressure, the powers that be will flush every day, just to help keep the fish in the area and scour the schmutz off the bottom. Well, it's nice to dream but don't get your hopes up.

6/16 -Heard from a client that the Bubbler is scheduled to go back on today. I think he's right. As I checked the flows at 10pm, the cfs went up, which signals the Bubbler is back on.....Thanks Bubbler Fixer Guy!!

6/12 -  The Spillway is still running, however the river is quickly warming to a dangerous level, if the "Bubbler" doesn't kick in soon. I'm told there are repairs needed before that could happen and if that is true, we could see a fish kill on the Swift.

It's smart NOT to play the fish for long.
Bring the fish in fast and revive before you release.

POACHER HOT LINE - 1-800-632-8075

Last  year, a band of Europeans, came in with their trash bags with the whole family. Everyday, around 4-5pm, for a few weeks, these greedy people took 3-4 dozen fish out of the lower half , around the "Hatchery Hole" and down stream. The rangers were called, however, the poachers had someone up in the parking lot and if anything looked to her , to be a bust, she would honk the horn like crazy or set off the car alarm and the poachers came running and got out of there, before the rangers could get there. Do all you can to protect our fishing and our fish, from these law breaking pigs. Get a license plate number, call the poacher hotline, do what you can to help, keep this from happening.  Thank you.

July 1st is the date when the lower portion of the river,
below the RT-9 bridge to Cady Lane,
becomes "catch & release" until December 31.
Please obey and release the fish back into the water, unharmed.
Report poaching and NO LIVE BAIT!!!

UNDERSTAND THE RULES FOR THIS OR IT WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR LONG!

This meeting took place in 2002, however, the issues still alive, & rules are the same in 2009

The meeting was to discuss all fishing activity on MDC land in and
around
the Quabbin.  Here's a summary:

Bill Pula ran the meeting assisted by State Senator Stephen Brewer
(sits on
the Natural Resources and Security committees)
---------------------------------------------------
Agenda
2002 Fishing Season at Quabbin

1. Overall considerations and constraints:
Maintain a reasonable level of control over security

  Maintain water quality controls

Maintain access for the public to fish
  Limit or eliminate overtime
  Operate areas with fewer personnel

[Comments:  There were two overriding concerns: security for the water
resource, and budget.  The State budget crisis is probably the most
limiting
thing right now - there's no money to staff the three fishing areas as
in
the past.  The security for the reservoir, dams, pump houses,
disinfection
stations, etc. are critical and Boston would shut down all access on
MDC
property if they could.]

2. Fishing areas

[Comments: many potential ways to fund and staff the three fishing
areas

were presented and debated.  The majority of the crowd seemed to be
members
of Quabbin Anglers and related groups lobbying for boat and shoreline
access.  The bait shop owners were very vocal.  The most likely
compromise
is a simple plan to staff the gates between 6:30AM and 4:30PM seven
days a
week, with a reduction to 4 days a week in the fall.]

3. Shore fishing.
Pretty much will remain open as in the past.  Some gates will
remain
closed (gates 44 and 43a) and no night fishing permits will be granted
between gates 43a and 50.

4. Y-Pool and Swift River to Route 9 boundary

Walk in access to west bank only
   Sunrise to sunset only

Only
walk in access will be allowed - the parking area below the dam will
probably never re-open.  You can walk in from Route 9, or from the
trail
from the parking lot at the Visitor Center.  There are two fences being
constructed (and other security measures that they would not detail).
There
will be a fence from the end of the rotary, crossing the river below
the
current fence around the bubblers,  surrounding the power plant.  This will

cut off a small section of the channel we call the 'bubbler run' - Bill
said
about 100 feet, but I think that's probably too much.  This is not open
for
debate - the security people want an easily defensible area around the
power
plant and bubblers.  The other fence will completely surround the
disinfection station.  This will also be a very secure area.  The
security
team wants to keep people away from the easy bank completely (not to
say you
couldn't step onto the bank, but they definitely don't want people on
the
road on that side).  This was discussed as a public safety issue -
there are
armed national guardsmen patrolling the power plant and disinfection
station
and they want to avoid 'accidents'.  Bill Adams lobbied for later
access,
and Marty Frisbie insisted that later access and access to the east
side of
the river was 'essential'.  I think this is a dead horse - the security
people are running access, not reasonable people, and we're lucky they
managed to get us some limited access.  I'm inclined to stay on the
west
side, stay away from the armed guards, and hope the situation comes
back to sanity over time.

5. Other considerations
Probable opening date is April 13.  This is a target date subject to
approval by State Police, MWRA, Unions.  The opening of the Y-pool
depends
also on completion of fencing and other security measures.  Bill Pula
thinks
April 13 is possible but can't guarantee it.

There will probably be a change in fees for boat rentals

There is potential for further loss of staff due to the State budget
problem.  Jane Swift can pull all their funding at any time.  Since the
y-pool area has no staffing, budget cuts probably will not reduce access to
that area - only the three areas on the Quabbin are at risk.

Everything is off if there's any hint of a security problem.

People causing security problems could cause the access to be lifted......

(Do ya get it?..Mess up and get greedy or stupid and you wreck it for the rest.)

This information was provided to me by Stan Gula, who is board member
of TU, and who was present at this important meeting held on March 1st, 2002.
These rules are still in place in 2008 and will stay in place until further notice.

The sarcastic remark at the end is all mine!
